The Rajasthan High Court sits at Jaipur as a bench, with its principal seat at Jodhpur, and many Jaipur chambers carry matters at both. Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan. It is not, however, where the Rajasthan High Court has its principal seat. That is at Jodhpur, roughly 330 kilometres to the west. Jaipur is a bench of the same court.
The consequence is unusual and specific. In most states, an advocate at the seat of the High Court rarely thinks about anywhere else, and an advocate at a bench thinks mostly about their own bench. In Rajasthan, a Jaipur practice of any real size accumulates matters at both. A client's writ may be at Jaipur while the connected appeal is at Jodhpur; a firm's regular corporate work may sit at one and its service matters at the other. Two seats, one practice, and 330 kilometres of road in between.
This is the reverse of the single-seat argument that applies in Gujarat or Kerala. There, the problem is that everything comes to one place. Here, the problem is that a chamber has to hold two rosters in its head and neither of them will remind it about the other.
